Located in Palo Alto, the Startup Island TAIWAN Silicon Valley hub offers professional consulting, co-working spaces, and a platform to connect startups with venture capitalists, tech leaders, and international markets. The initiative is spearheaded by Taiwan’s National Development Council (NDC), following the successful debut of a similar hub in Tokyo in 2024.
At the launch event, NDC Minister Liu Chin-ching emphasized Taiwan’s global leadership in semiconductors and AI servers, citing the country’s ~90% market share in both industries. Despite a global slump in startup funding last year, Taiwan saw a 10% increase, reaching a record NT$2.8 billion (~US$846 million) in funding. The Silicon Valley hub is expected to support over 100 startups and help repatriate 2,000 tech professionals to Taiwan by the end of the year.
The hub is also being positioned as a potential anchor point for deeper collaboration with major global tech firms. Liu announced that Nvidia plans to set up an Asia headquarters in Taipei, potentially creating 2,500 new jobs—though the company has yet to confirm location details.
The site’s director, Dennis Liu, described the hub as a “bridge” between Taiwan and the U.S., while startup founders praised the initiative but called for financial support to offset high overseas operating costs.
