SpaceX wraps $60B Cursor buy as Grok 4.6 ships

SpaceX closed its $60B acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor on Friday, completing a deal that started with an April training partnership and a binding agreement in June.

The close was confirmed in a regulatory filing, with approval arriving on the schedule SpaceX set out in its 8-K. The legal entity, Anysphere, keeps its name, while Cursor keeps its brand, its blog and the freedom to run its own transactions.

Cursor’s own note focused on compute. “We will have access to the largest fleet of GPUs in the world, giving us the compute to build stronger models that are also more economical to run,” the company wrote. The pitch to customers: more capable models at lower cost.

Grok 4.6, released Wednesday, is an early look at the combined effort, and Grok Bot followed on August 11 as a team-of-agents product. The deal is part of Elon Musk’s push to close ground on Anthropic and OpenAI, which dominate enterprise AI. SpaceXAI had limited business adoption before Cursor arrived, while Cursor’s assistant became one of the fastest-growing startups on record during the vibe-coding era.

Unusual detail: a company being bought for $60B was still buying the day before. Cursor announced on August 13 that Firetiger had joined, a year after it picked up Graphite. The flurry suggests SpaceX intends to let Cursor run its own race while supplying the computing muscle underneath.
