Duolingo has acquired Animade, the London animation studio behind expressive motion systems for some of the world’s biggest tech brands. The startup’s team will join Duolingo’s Design Studio, deepening the language app’s creative bench and giving it a larger presence in the UK.
Terms were not disclosed. Animade built its name on interactive experiences and product storytelling, work that sits squarely inside Duolingo’s playful brand identity. The owl mascot is already the company’s most valuable asset, and motion design has become central to how it keeps learners engaged and returning.
Jen Judd, Animade’s co-founder, framed the deal as a continuation of the studio’s mission to share joy through design. Duolingo’s head of design, Mig Reyes, said the acquisition is an investment in people and craft, adding that bringing personality into every pixel makes technology feel more human.
For the startup world, the deal is a reminder that acqui-hires are back in style for creative talent, not just engineers. Duolingo has been buying its way into content and design capabilities, and Animade’s founders get the distribution of a public company with a famously sticky consumer brand.
The acquisition also underscores how edtech companies are competing on delight rather than features alone. With AI-generated content flooding the learning app market, a distinctive visual voice is becoming a genuine moat.
