Starling Bank ships weekly AI tools inside its agentic assistant

The UK neobank is releasing new Smart tools every week, with customers crowdsourcing the roadmap for its AI assistant.

Starling Bank has launched Smart tools, a set of AI-powered helpers that drop inside Starling Assistant, which the lender calls the UK’s first agentic AI financial assistant. New tools will land every week, the bank said Thursday.

The launch lineup includes a tax saver that sweeps money into a dedicated Space for SMEs, a Making Tax Digital guide, a spending quiz, a student budget planner, a rainy-day saver and fraud controls that switch on protections like its snatch-theft detector.

Starling Assistant responds to natural language and voice prompts and can perform banking tasks on a customer’s behalf, from setting up transfers to analyzing spending. The weekly cadence is meant to expand its capabilities quickly.

The roadmap is crowdsourced: Starling’s 5 million retail and SME customers can request tools for the AI team to build, and the bank says every launch feature came from customer requests submitted across the UK.

Group CIO Harriet Rees says many customers already treat the assistant as second nature, while others are still learning what AI can do for them. The pre-programmed tools, she argues, remove the guesswork – a tap replaces a blank prompt.

The rollout shows UK banks moving AI beyond chatbots into tax compliance, fraud prevention and budgeting. For Starling, the bet is that a steady stream of practical tools – not a single flashy feature – turns its assistant into the default way customers bank.
