Helogen wants to turn low Earth orbit into a cleanroom for making medicine. The New York startup has raised $7.1M in seed funding to scale the automated hardware it uses to manufacture biomaterials aboard satellites.

The company builds robotic fabrication equipment and remote-controlled bioreactors that operate inside orbiting satellite modules, cultivating cells and running crystallization chambers in microgravity. Weightlessness allows near-perfect molecular structures and material purity, which the startup says makes possible advanced biomaterials for medical implants that terrestrial labs cannot replicate.

Two venture firms led the financing together: RRE Ventures and Oceans, with One Way Ventures and Blisce joining the cap table.

Operations are run remotely: cloud-linked systems watch real-time environmental telemetry and automate cell cultivation and material synthesis, creating a commercial pipeline for biopharma companies and academic research teams to design next-generation implants, according to the company.

Chief executive Shishir Bankapur says the money will go toward mechanical scaling of the fabrication hardware, expanding the aerospace engineering and molecular biology teams, and accelerating customer-funded research programs.

The raise lands as launch costs keep falling and investors warm to commercial activity in orbit beyond satellites and communications, from drug development to materials science. Helogen is staking out biology as the first repeatable manufacturing use case in space.
