Agentic AI comes to German tax prep as Limetax banks €36M

Limetax, a Berlin startup rolling up German tax and accounting firms, has raised €36M in a package that pairs a €6M pre-seed equity round with a €30M credit facility reserved for buying more practices.

The equity tranche was anchored by New York’s Motive Partners, with Activant and Heliad in tow. Angel money arrived from unusual corners: Christian Lindner, who once ran Germany’s finance ministry, ex-Rocket Internet executive and 468 Capital co-founder Alexander Kudlich, and Anton Rummel and Ante Spittler, the pair behind fintech unicorn Moss. A consortium of German banks supplied the credit line.

The operating model is to buy profitable local tax firms, keep their brands and client relationships, and embed an AI platform in daily work on top of DATEV, the software used by about 90% of German accountants. Agentic AI coordinates bookkeeping, payroll and financial statements, shrinking a monthly bookkeeping task from around 20 hours to six while human accountants review output and keep professional responsibility.

Limetax says it has expanded to four firms across seven locations, employs around 150 people and reaches double-digit millions in annual revenue. Founder Christoph Gamon previously helped build a roll-up that reached unicorn status with more than 100 M&A deals. As Motive Partners’ Michael Hock puts it, the constraint in accounting and tax is not demand but capacity, and Limetax is part of a European wave pairing AI with professional-services consolidation instead of replacing advisers outright.
