A female-led South African venture firm is betting that Africa’s problem is not a shortage of seed capital but the near-absence of money for the round after.

Grindstone Ventures has launched a ZAR 500M fund, about $31.3M, to back technology-enabled African businesses from seed through Series A. It plans a ZAR 150M first close and a portfolio of 15 to 20 companies, mainly in South Africa with selective deals elsewhere on the continent.

Managing partner Thandiwe Maqetuka leads the vehicle, backed by Knife Capital and Thinkroom. The target is the gap between early commercial validation and institutional-scale growth, where founders often stall because no local fund writes the next cheque.

The strategy is hands-on rather than passive: meaningful minority stakes plus follow-on capital and support across strategy, governance, commercial growth, market access and exit readiness. At least half the portfolio is to be black-owned businesses.

Grindstone’s first vehicle invested in seven companies including Locstat, Welo and AgriLogiQ.

Its launch joins a wider wave of African fund formation, from AHL Venture Partners’ debt facility for Kenyan startup Watu to specialist vehicles focused on climate, health and logistics. Whether that translates into later-stage capital, or simply more seed competing for the same thin exit market, is the open question.
