Ema banks $77M to push AI employees into HR and finance

The Mountain View company says agents are starting to displace the software and services budgets it sells against.

Bengaluru’s Creaegis carried the $77M Series B that Ema has just closed, and the round pulled Accel, Section 32 and Prosus in for larger positions. The Mountain View company puts its total raise at $140M, more than quadrupling its 2024 valuation, a figure it will not name. No debt and no secondary sales went into the round; every dollar was primary equity.

Ema’s product is what it calls AI employees: agent teams that execute multi-step work in HR, IT and finance without leaving a customer’s existing applications. Ema reports more than 50 enterprise deals, over a million active users and bookings past $150M across multiyear contracts. Net dollar retention sits near 180%, and gross margins are close to 80%.

Surojit Chatterjee, once an executive at Google and Coinbase, co-founded the company in 2023 with ex-Okta executive Souvik Sen. Chatterjee argues that agents will hollow out parts of the software stack. Customers wrap Ema around the applications they already own, he says, and then retire tools they no longer need, because once software can act across them, big SaaS products amount to little more than databases.

The frontier labs, in Chatterjee’s view, are not the competitors he worries about. Domain knowledge, integrations and orchestration are where Ema competes, drawing on more than 150 models and billing for completed tasks rather than by seat or token. The company counts almost 200 employees across Bengaluru, London and Vancouver, with a push planned into Asia-Pacific, South America and the Middle East.
