Arceus Legal banks $17M to run a law firm on AI agents

The San Francisco firm pairs in-house AI agents with flat, upfront pricing and a promise that slow contract reviews are free.

Every document that leaves Arceus Legal still carries a licensed attorney’s signature, but the drafting behind it is machine-made. The San Francisco firm has banked $17M to push that model past the contract work it began with, adding practice areas as it hires.

Greycroft took the lead on the round, joined by Craft Ventures and South Park Commons. The cash goes toward staffing the firm’s San Francisco base.

Clients see a flat figure agreed before any work begins: a routine contract review is listed at $500, and a matter that drags past eight hours costs the client nothing. Three to five hours is the typical turnaround, according to the firm.

Its attorneys operate through CounselOS, an operating system Arceus built in house that logs every client’s preferences, prior agreements and negotiating history. Feeds from Salesforce, HubSpot and Gmail supply context, so a fresh matter inherits what the firm already knows.

Demand has been steep, with the customer base quadrupling during September as employment and privacy instructions arrived alongside commercial contracts. Founder and chief executive Mac Liu says missed deadlines and over-budget invoices at the law firms he once used pushed him to build his own, arguing the billable hour rewards slowness. Greycroft partner Mark Terbeek frames the bet simply: rivals sell incumbent firms sharper software, while Arceus is rebuilding the law firm itself.
