Pat Gelsinger, the former Intel chief executive now at Playground Global, sits down with a16z partners Raghu Raghuram and Guido Appenzeller to work through what actually constrains the AI buildout.
Drawing on his years designing Intel’s 386 and 486 processors, Gelsinger argues that AI can meaningfully accelerate chip design – but that faster design alone will not fix manufacturing capacity, memory bandwidth, advanced packaging or power. He expects today’s explosion of specialized AI accelerators to eventually consolidate around far fewer architectures.
The conversation also covers new memory technologies, the shift from copper to optical networking, and why energy capacity may end up being the hardest ceiling of all.
