Two quantum computing startups betting on different hardware announced major rounds the same day, splitting $575M between them.

Oratomic, based in California and founded in 2025, raised $475M in a Series B that arrived three months after a $300M Series A. Khosla Ventures, Spark Capital, ARCH Venture Partners, Bezos Expeditions, Index Ventures and General Catalyst co-led, lifting total funding to $775M and the valuation from $1.5B to $5.5B.

The company works with reconfigurable neutral-atom arrays, and its central claim is efficiency: while the industry generally assumes roughly a million qubits are needed for commercially useful fault tolerance, Oratomic says it can hit high fidelity with about 10,000.

Universal Quantum, based in the UK, builds its qubits from charged atoms that electric fields hold in place. Firgun Ventures and DCVC co-led its Series A, the largest ever raised by a UK-headquartered quantum firm, with Integral GlobalTech, EDBI, Main Sequence, Artal and Hostplus also participating.

Its design ties classical control units directly into the quantum chip layer to cut noise and speed up readout. Chief executive Sebastian Weidt argues the approach offers “one of the most credible paths to quantum computing at scale.”

Both companies are chasing the same problem: a single qubit is fragile, and heat, electromagnetism, vibration or a stray cosmic particle can wipe the information it holds. Entangling more qubits and reading them faster lets a system suppress more errors overall. Neither has a commercial fault-tolerant machine yet, but checks this size suggest investors now want to back several architectural bets at once rather than wait to see which one wins.
