ByteDance moves toward a custom chip deal with MediaTek

ByteDance is in advanced talks to buy custom data-center AI chips from MediaTek as export limits squeeze Nvidia supply.

ByteDance is in advanced talks to buy custom data-center chips from MediaTek, a deal that would make the TikTok owner a major customer of the Taiwanese company’s application-specific chip business.

Bloomberg reported the discussions, noting the volume under negotiation has not been disclosed and no agreement has been signed. If it closes, ByteDance would become MediaTek’s second-largest ASIC customer behind Google.

The motivation is straightforward. US export restrictions have limited ByteDance’s access to Nvidia’s most advanced accelerators, so the company is assembling a broader supplier base to feed its expanding AI infrastructure.

For MediaTek the upside is a route beyond smartphones, where it has been strongest historically. Data-center silicon has far wider margins and longer design cycles, and landing a marquee Chinese hyperscaler would validate years of investment.

The deal also illustrates how the export squeeze is reshaping supply chains. Chinese platforms are shifting from off-the-shelf American parts to co-designed chips from Asian foundries and design houses, which spreads advanced packaging demand across new vendors.

Nothing is final, and such agreements can stall on volume commitments or US regulatory scrutiny. But the direction of travel is clear, and it matters to every startup renting compute in the region.
