Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd., the Japanese automotive manufacturer, has invested in ElevationSpace, Inc., a Tohoku University startup developing round-trip space transportation systems centered around atmospheric reentry technology.
ElevationSpace aims to build reusable space transportation systems that support the movement of crew and cargo in space and earth orbit. The company provides end-to-end services from development through operation of small satellites, with a focus on those that can return safely to earth.
The startup’s small satellites utilize special materials capable of withstanding the extreme heat of atmospheric reentry. This capability is expected to increase the frequency at which research results from outer space can be returned to earth, potentially accelerating space development and scientific discovery.
For Toyoda Gosei, the investment represents a strategic move into new fields beyond its traditional automotive parts business. As the automobile industry undergoes profound changes, the company is exploring sectors where its manufacturing and materials expertise can be applied. The space-related business being advanced by ElevationSpace is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
The investment was made through Toyoda Gosei’s Corporate Venture Capital Department in June 2026. ElevationSpace, founded in February 2021 and led by CEO Ryohei Kobayashi, has raised approximately ¥2.1 billion in capital as of April 2026.
