Motive collects $1.3B to wire AI into physical operations

Motive has raised more than $1.3B, a haul that underscores how much capital is chasing AI applied to the physical economy rather than to chatbots.

The San Francisco company sells an AI platform for what it calls physical operations, spanning transportation, construction, energy, field service, manufacturing, agriculture, retail and the public sector. Customers number nearly 100,000. General Catalyst’s Customer Value Fund backed the round.

Motive’s pitch is consolidation. Safety, operations and finance teams use one system to manage workers, vehicles, equipment and fleet spend, with products covering maintenance, operations intelligence, collision prevention and automated field reporting. That breadth matters for fleets that otherwise stitch together a dozen point tools.

Led by co-founder and chief executive Shoaib Makani, the company plans to push deeper into AI features and widen its enterprise sales reach internationally.

The size of the raise signals that investors see durable demand in software for the parts of the economy that move goods and people. Motive competes with telematics incumbents and newer AI-native entrants hunting the same fleet budgets.
