Apple told the European Commission it will make employment offers to certain Huxe AI employees and take a non-exclusive license to the startup’s intellectual property. Terms were not disclosed and no names were given.
Huxe built a personalized audio product and had already wound down. The company announced in May that it would pull its app from the Apple and Google stores, stop service and delete user data. Its founders had previously worked on the AI podcast features inside NotebookLM.
Notably, the shutdown came a day after Spotify showed off its own AI podcast generation tools. Apple’s Podcasts app has no comparable feature, which is one plausible reason the team is now on Apple’s payroll.
Why it matters: this is the deal shape of the moment. Even after a startup stops operating, its engineers and code remain valuable, and buyers increasingly prefer licensing plus hiring over outright acquisitions that invite regulatory attention. Apple filed the notice with Brussels rather than a domestic agency, a reminder that even modest AI deals now get reviewed in Europe.
