Anthropic pulled in $16.8B of revenue in the third quarter and turned profitable on an adjusted basis for the first time, according to figures the company shared with investors eyeing shares in its coming float.

The disclosure was made at a private meeting with would-be shareholders, and the Financial Times reported the number first. The AI lab is widely expected to list in November at a valuation of up to $2T, which would place it among the most valuable businesses anywhere.

The figure carries weight well beyond the company. Investors treat Anthropic’s top line as a read on the health of the whole AI trade, and its earlier numbers have moved the wider market. Revenue stood at $4.8B in the first quarter and $11.6B in the second, so the latest reading is a sequential gain of roughly 45%.

Plenty remains opaque. The Financial Times did not say whether $16.8B is gross or net, or how Anthropic defines profitability, and as a private company it owes outsiders no such detail.

That opacity cuts both ways. The same outlet recently corrected its estimate of OpenAI’s annualized run rate down to $50B from about $68B, a revision that knocked 1.25% off the Nasdaq and hit Oracle, CoreWeave, Intel and Nvidia harder still.

For founders and backers, the read-through is blunt. Two private labs now set the tone for public tech valuations, and any error in their numbers lands on everyone else’s balance sheet.
