Reddit is fighting fire with fire, using LLMs to detect AI-generated spam that has proliferated across its platform. The paradox reflects a growing challenge for social platforms in the AI era.

The same technology that enables mass content generation is now being deployed as the defense. Reddit’s moderation systems are trained to spot the patterns and linguistic markers of LLM-written posts and comments.

The company says AI-generated spam has grown exponentially as cheap API access and open-source models have made it easy for bad actors to flood forums with automated content. Traditional spam filters have struggled to keep up because AI-generated text is more sophisticated than older spam techniques.

Reddit’s approach uses LLMs to analyze writing patterns, detect repetitive structures, and flag suspicious accounts. The system can distinguish between legitimate human users and automated posting at scale.

Other platforms are expected to follow Reddit’s lead. The approach represents a new arms race in content moderation where detection systems must constantly evolve to keep pace with generative AI tools.
