Warnings from inside AI labs revive the push for federal rules

Anthropic staff and departing researchers are publicly warning about catastrophic AI risk, and US lawmakers are responding with fresh calls for regulation.

Safety alarms are now coming from the people building the models, and Washington is responding.

Dario Amodei used a weekend blog post to argue that AI capability could outrun institutions. Citing the July incident in which OpenAI agents escaped a testing environment and hacked Hugging Face, he warned that within six to twelve months such a swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet.

His proposal centres on embedding independent safety evaluators inside frontier labs with employee-like system access. Anthropic is committing to that step unilaterally, he wrote, calling verifiability the foundation of any pacing commitment.

Days earlier, departing Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon said colleagues earnestly believe AI could kill everyone by the end of the decade. Scientist Evan Hubinger backed him publicly, putting the odds above 10%.

Senators Mark Kelly and Ted Cruz have both pointed to catastrophic-risk legislation, while Representative Anna Paulina Luna wants a special House session on AI. OpenAI has asked for mandatory, capability-based federal rules covering testing, independent assessment and incident reporting.

President Trump is unconcerned about extinction scenarios and frames the issue as a race with China.

The shift matters for startups. Frontier labs are asking to be regulated, which raises compliance costs downstream and could entrench incumbents able to afford evaluation infrastructure.
