Colossal Biosciences is negotiating a new funding round that could value the de-extinction company between $20B and $30B, according to Axios, roughly double or triple its most recent valuation from early 2025.
The Dallas company raised $200M at about $10B a little over a year ago. Colossal’s technology stack combines ancient DNA recovery with CRISPR gene editing, artificial womb incubation, and computational biology tools that have spun off into separate business units serving conservation and pharmaceutical clients.
Founder Ben Lamm has built Colossal into one of the most valuable private biotech companies globally. The startup has raised more than $450M to date from investors including In-Q-Tel, Breyer Capital, and high-profile individual backers such as Paris Hilton.
Axios reported that talks remain ongoing and terms could shift. The exact size of the raise has not been disclosed. A $20B plus valuation would place Colossal among the top five most valuable private life sciences companies globally, rivaling Neuralink and leading gene therapy startups.
The company projects it will produce its first de-extinct species, the dodo bird, within three years using its proprietary gene-editing and surrogate incubation techniques. Several spin-off ventures have already generated standalone revenue streams from the core research.
Investor appetite for Colossal reflects broader enthusiasm for frontier biotech startups that combine multiple cutting-edge technologies into platform businesses with diverse commercial applications beyond their flagship mission.
