The European Space Agency has committed to sending a rover to the Moon’s south pole to hunt for water ice, awarding Luxembourg-based ispace-EUROPE a €€65 million contract to build and fly the mission.

The rover, called MAGPIE (Mission for Advanced Geophysics and Polar Ice Exploration), will scout the lunar south pole for frozen water deposits. It marks Europe’s first ground vehicle designed explicitly for polar ice analysis on the Moon. The contract pays for design, manufacturing, testing, landing delivery, and operations on the surface.

Understanding how much water exists at the lunar south pole is a critical stepping stone for any future Moon base. Water can be converted into drinking supply, breathable oxygen, and rocket fuel, reducing the need to haul supplies from Earth.

ispace-EUROPE is the Luxembourg subsidiary of Japanese lunar company ispace, which listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2023. The European arm has been growing its rover and lander engineering capabilities out of Luxembourg City, positioning itself for the growing number of ESA lunar programs.

The MAGPIE contract represents one of the largest single awards ESA has made for a robotic lunar mission, signaling that the agency is moving beyond orbital science toward practical resource prospecting on the surface.
