Munich-based Zeit AI has closed a EUR4.3M funding round, roughly $5M, to build what it calls Europe’s autonomous data engineer for mid-market companies. Y Combinator led participation alongside the University of Oxford’s Seed Fund, the Sequoia Capital Scout Fund, ACE Ventures and Hasso Plattner VC.
The round also drew angels including former German finance minister Christian Lindner, World Cup winner Mario Gotze, Meta board member Charlie Songhurst, Martin Schoeller and Helsing CTO Robert Fink. The startup argues Europe’s industrial base cannot outsource the decisions that run it and that sovereign data infrastructure should be the default for its customers.
Zeit AI’s platform automates data engineering work such as pipeline building, schema management and analytics preparation, letting companies point it at their data and get production-ready models without a large in-house data team. The startup targets the mid-market gap between spreadsheet-driven companies and enterprises with full data organizations.
The founders declined to name customers in the announcement, but the investor list carries weight: YC’s involvement gives Zeit access to its US network while Oxford, Sequoia’s scout fund and Hasso Plattner anchor it in European research and enterprise circles.
The raise lands amid a European push for data sovereignty and AI infrastructure that companies control. If Zeit delivers on the autonomous data engineer pitch, it joins a growing cluster of German startups selling AI tooling to the industrial backbone rather than to hyperscalers.
