AI-powered candidate screening is being absorbed into one of Europe’s largest HR software platforms. Berlin startup Empion, whose technology evaluates job seekers on cultural fit, skills and personality rather than just scanning CVs for keywords, is being acquired by Barcelona-based Factorial for an undisclosed sum.

The deal moves Empion’s founders and team into Factorial’s German operation. Co-founder Dr. Annika von Mutius, a mathematics Ph.D. who sits on the board of the German AI Association, will join the buyer’s leadership as her company’s technology is gradually folded into the Factorial platform over time. Existing Empion customers keep their contracts and service unchanged for now.

Empion launched in 2021 and counts Deutsche Telekom, Procter & Gamble, Siemens Mobility and the Volksbanken group among its clients. It raised roughly $9M with Redstone among its backers and had already bought Berlin recruiting specialist Zalvus in an earlier consolidation move.

The buyer is no stranger to fast growth. Factorial was founded in Barcelona in 2016, passed 17,000 customers across 90-plus countries and became a unicorn in 2022. General Catalyst led its most recent round, a $150M Series D at a $2.5B valuation, alongside Atomico and Four Rivers.

Germany has been Factorial’s top European market since it planted a Munich office and began hiring at a clip of up to 50 people a week. Empion hands it blue-chip local references, a seated Berlin engineering bench and a screening engine to sell across the installed base, pulling hiring workflow from application to onboarding into one platform.
