Wand’s cluster tuning tech lands inside groundcover’s platform

The observability vendor has acquired Wand Cloud, its first acquisition, to push deeper into autonomous infrastructure.

Groundcover has made its first acquisition, taking over Wand Cloud, a startup whose software tunes how Kubernetes clusters spend their processors and memory. Observability for cloud infrastructure is groundcover’s business. The price went undisclosed, and Wand’s founders and staff are moving across.

The gap Wand closes is a familiar one: engineers must declare how much processor and memory a workload may claim before it has ever faced real traffic. Guess generously and every replica and node carries the waste. Guess tightly and a shift in traffic brings throttling, or worse. Even a setting that was right on day one drifts as the services behind it change.

Autoscalers already handle fragments of that job. Vertical, horizontal and cluster-level versions tend to run on their own, groundcover argues, and the interaction bites: tightening a request lifts measured utilization, the horizontal autoscaler answers by adding replicas nobody needed, node packing moves, and the cluster autoscaler reacts in turn.

Wand’s approach is to sit inside the cluster and settle all three scaling decisions together, rewriting allocations on live infrastructure as demand moves instead of leaving engineers a queue of right-sizing recommendations to work through later.

Groundcover co-founder and chief executive Shahar Azulay framed the deal around safety rather than scale: “For infrastructure to become autonomous, systems also need to act safely on what they know,” he said, pointing to Wand’s years of work “building exactly that capability for Kubernetes.”

Groundcover, the observability vendor, has raised $160M since it was founded, most recently a $100M Series C that One Peak led in July. Telemetry stays in each customer’s own cloud account under a bring-your-own-cloud model. Wand’s technology will show up in two places: groundcover’s own platform, which runs inside those accounts, and directly in customers’ hands. No timeline was given.
