Email clients and notetakers are converging on the same prize: the moment before work begins.
Superhuman is buying Fathom, a Y Combinator-backed meeting recorder, in a deal that folds transcription straight into an assistant able to act on what was said.
Terms were not disclosed. Fathom had raised more than $30M and was valued at $94M in 2024, according to PitchBook. Its backers include Zoom Apps Fund, Telescope Partners, BoxOne Ventures and Maven Ventures, plus angel investors Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear and Cruise co-founder Kyle Vogt.
A generous free tier drew more than 400,000 monthly active users, and Fathom says over 1 million people have recorded meetings on it.
The strategic logic is context. Today’s productivity agents sit idle until a user types a prompt. Transcripts, decisions and action items hand an assistant the raw material to begin work on its own, which is why Superhuman bought users and recordings rather than building a notetaker internally.
Fathom was founded in 2020 and competes with Granola, Otter and Zoom’s own AI companion.
Why it matters: meeting data is becoming the front door for enterprise agents, and whoever owns the transcript owns the workflow that follows.
