Vantora, the startup builder once called UP.Labs, has raised $100M from Silversmith Capital Partners, its first outside investment.
Chief executive John Kuolt has narrowed the remit. Ventures are now built only for the corporations that pay for them and act as their debut customers, and those backers may absorb a finished company into their own operations instead of taking it to market. Kuolt’s phrase for the arrangement is a proprietary mergers and acquisitions pipeline.
That shift pushed Vantora toward physical AI. Industrial groups retooling hardware and machines for autonomy want to own that intelligence layer rather than rent it from a third party, he said, pointing to an idea for partner J.B. Hunt that was shelved because it could not be sold externally.
The firm launched in 2022 with Porsche as its first corporate partner and has since struck deals with Alaska Airlines, J.B. Hunt, Wabash and TDG, the parent of Ashley Furniture. It now also works with unnamed industrial manufacturers and oil and gas customers.
Vantora still shares office space with venture firm Up.Partners but operates as a separate entity.
