Espoo spin-out Coherence Quantum banks €2.78M for cryogenic control

Aalto University spin-out Coherence Quantum has raised €2.78M to build the cryogenic signalling and control layer that larger quantum computers will need.

There is a money question at the heart of the AI agent boom that almost nobody wants to underwrite. Coherence Quantum went and raised €2.78M to answer one narrow piece of it.

The Finnish startup, spun out of Aalto University’s quantum computing and devices group, is building an integrated cryogenic signalling and control platform. Investors include the deep tech backers tracking Finland’s quantum cluster; the round will fund a laboratory in Espoo, first product prototypes, manufacturing processes and hiring.

The technical problem is prosaic and brutal. Adding qubits to a quantum processor means adding control and readout lines, and those lines have to live inside a dilution refrigerator where space and cooling capacity are both scarce. Conventional approaches scale by adding wiring and signal-conditioning hardware, so complexity grows roughly in step with the machine.

Coherence Quantum’s bet is that the plumbing, not the qubit, becomes the binding constraint. The team has spent more than two years building and testing prototypes inside dilution refrigerators against real qubit systems.

Plumbing as a product

Chief executive and co-founder Aashish Sah describes a staged route: signal conditioning first, then higher-density interfaces, then more integrated cryogenic control. The stated goal is an architecture where wiring and cooling demands stop rising in lockstep with qubit count.

That is a component play in a market that rewards whoever becomes the default. Longer term the company wants its technology folded into a standardised architecture alongside other vendors’ parts, which would make it a reference supplier rather than a challenger to quantum computer builders.

The risk is timing. Component suppliers live or die on their customers’ roadmaps, and quantum hardware makers are still years from volume production. Coherence Quantum is effectively betting that the scaling crunch arrives before the funding does.
