Five cheques carried Europe’s EUR 27.8B venture quarter

European funding jumped 32% year on year, but four companies and five rounds did most of the work.

Europe’s venture numbers look healthy until you open them up. Tech.eu data puts Q3 2026 investment at €27.8B, up 32.4% on the €21B recorded a year earlier and more than two and a half times the €11B of Q3 2024.

The concentration behind that growth is the story. Five deals cleared €1B in the quarter, involving four companies: Mistral AI with €3B, Nscale with two rounds of roughly €2.95B and €2.59B, Helsing at €1.58B and Quantum Systems at €1.05B.

Nscale alone raised about €6.3B across three transactions in Q3, including a further €787M in July. Strip out that handful of names and the quarter’s underlying deal flow looks far thinner, and August was weak before September recovered sharply.

Two sectors took nearly half

AI companies raised €6.7B and cloud companies €6.4B, together more than €13B, or about 47% of all capital deployed. Everything else shared what remained, with average round sizes falling away quickly once the mega-rounds are excluded.

Investor participation stayed broad: over 2,630 backers took part in the quarter, with Innovate UK the most active.

What a rebound like this hides

A market where five cheques define the total is fragile. It rewards founders in compute, defence and AI infrastructure, and it tells the rest of the ecosystem to expect smaller rounds and longer gaps. The Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, which led Pigment’s £250M round this week, is designed to address exactly that gap.

Whether Europe can convert mega-round concentration into a durable base of mid-stage companies is the open question for the next two quarters.
