AMD is making a bold double play in AI infrastructure. The chipmaker has committed $5 billion to Anthropic and simultaneously won Microsoft as a customer for its new Helios racks, according to Tech Funding News.
The $5B commitment to Anthropic marks one of the largest strategic investments by a chip company into an AI lab, positioning AMD as a direct challenger to Nvidia’s dominance in the AI training and inference market. Anthropic has been diversifying its compute providers beyond Nvidia, and AMD’s MI-series GPUs are increasingly being validated for large-scale AI workloads.
On the same front, Microsoft has agreed to use AMD’s AI-optimized Helios racks in its Azure data centers. The Helios platform is AMD’s answer to Nvidia’s DGX systems, designed specifically for massive AI model training clusters.
The twin wins give AMD a powerful narrative as it tries to break Nvidia’s stranglehold on the AI chip market, where Nvidia still commands an estimated 80% share. AMD shares rose on the news, with analysts noting that landing both Anthropic and Microsoft in the same week is a inflection point for the company’s AI ambitions.
