British cloud upstart Nscale lands Anthropic’s $45B compute pact

Nobody signs infrastructure deals quite like Anthropic. Bloomberg reported that the lab has agreed to rent roughly $45B of AI compute from Nscale, a British startup founded in 2024, in a six-year arrangement.

The six-year agreement draws capacity from Nscale’s flagship data center in West Virginia, powered by Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chip system, a six-chip design at the cutting edge of Nvidia’s lineup. The capacity is expected to come online in late 2027.

Nscale, which already counts Microsoft among its customers, becomes the latest beneficiary of Anthropic’s aggressive compute buildup. Over the past eight months the lab has signed a $10B pact with cloud startup Volta, a $5B deal with AMD, a $1.25B-per-month arrangement with SpaceX, and expanded its partnerships with Amazon, Google and Broadcom.

The deal underscores how AI labs are stockpiling compute capacity as they race OpenAI, and how young infrastructure players can land enormous contracts. Anthropic has not commented publicly on the agreement.
