Unnamed buyer commits $1.1B a month to SpaceX data centers

SpaceX has added a third major compute customer at roughly $1.1B a month, starting in December.

SpaceX has signed another large data centre hosting contract worth about $1.11B a month, chief financial officer Bret Johnsen told a Goldman Sachs conference, without naming the customer.

Payments begin on 1 December, he said, adding that the deal gave him more confidence the company will reach its target of $100B in annual recurring revenue by the end of the year.

The agreement adds to a roster of compute customers renting capacity at SpaceX’s Colossus sites in Mississippi and Tennessee. Anthropic pays $1.25B a month through May 2029 for room to serve its Claude models, while Google, a SpaceX shareholder, agreed to a $920M monthly arrangement in June.

Compute has become the binding constraint on frontier AI development. OpenAI, Meta and others are spending billions on their own campuses, a buildout that has drawn growing public resistance over power use and land.

SpaceX inherited much of its available capacity through February’s merger with xAI, the AI startup founded by Elon Musk. Johnsen told investors on the company’s second-quarter earnings call that SpaceX had already booked $6.7B in cloud services revenue this year.

The unnamed counterparty will matter commercially. Cloud hosting is becoming a recurring, contracted business for a company long defined by launch contracts, and the new deal lands months before a widely anticipated stock market listing.
