Smash Capital backs Firecrawl’s $75M push into agent data

A Series B funds deeper indexes and payments for the web data that AI agents retrieve.

Firecrawl has raised $75M in Series B money to broaden the pipeline that feeds live web data to AI agents.

Altos Ventures and Nexus Venture Partners joined the round, as did Y Combinator, Freestyle and Offline Ventures, with Smash Capital leading the deal.

Caleb Peffer, the chief executive, runs the San Francisco company. Its API gives AI agents a way to pull material from specialist research indexes and official data providers, scrape pages and search the live web. A companion product, Alexandria, brings government records, scientific papers and developer documentation together with ordinary web pages.

Three priorities get the funding: deeper indexes and retrieval systems, direct links into first-party sources, and a payments layer that pays knowledge contributors whenever agents consume what they published.

The crawler economy

Retrieval quality now separates good agent products from bad ones. A model is only as current as the data it can reach, and publishers have turned hostile toward scraping that goes unlicensed.

Compensating contributors is one answer, and it places Firecrawl at the center of a live argument over how AI companies should pay for the web they rely on. The open question is whether the company can stand up that settlement layer before the platform owners build one of their own.
