A non-Nvidia cloud lands $800M valuation with $100M and one big client

General Compute just banked $100M at an $800M valuation on the strength of non-Nvidia inference silicon and one very large customer.

Announcing a cloud computing round in the same week CoreWeave hit a 12-month low takes a certain temperament. Finn Puklowski has it.

The bet against GPUsDistribution is the real prize

His company, General Compute, closed a $100M Series A led by Blackbird Ventures and Abstract Ventures, lifting its valuation from $60M post-money in May to $800M. The trigger was a single customer commitment worth $100M in annual recurring revenue.

Puklowski argues the market is mispricing the risk. Elon Musk’s prediction that 200-plus neoclouds face consolidation is, in his reading, a buyer talking his book down. Requests for capacity, he says, arrive weekly.

The bet against GPUs

General Compute rents out inference silicon rather than the Nvidia accelerators everyone else queues for. It signed a $400M deal for chips from SambaNova, described as the first debt financing of inference hardware, and has since added Positron and Cerebras as suppliers.

The physical build stays deliberately small. Instead of pouring concrete for hyperscale halls, the company leases space inside other operators’ facilities, taps modest power sources and converts retired bitcoin-mining sites into model-serving floors.

That caps how fast it can grow, but it also severs the timeline that has hobbled rivals waiting years for grid connections. Puklowski expects to deploy 75 megawatts in 2027 and believes he can reach 200 megawatts of available power, more than he can equip.

Distribution is the real prize

Blackbird principal James Palmer tied the firm’s conviction to its Baseten investment, arguing that Cerebras, Positron and SambaNova each need partners who can turn engineering into deployed capacity.

Puklowski concedes the fundraising has only started. Capital, he said, is now a full-time job on both the debt and equity sides.
