Not every fund close needs a hot category attached. AP Ventures quietly finished raising $300M (€269.62M) for its third vehicle, a final close that says as much about institutional appetite for industrial hardware as any AI round this week.

The London firm backs early-stage companies working on industrial productivity, supply security and the resilience of energy systems, typically at seed and Series A. Fund III has deployed into thirteen portfolio companies since its 2024 first close. Backers include sovereign wealth funds, corporates, pension funds and family offices.

Beyond hydrogen

The portfolio spans energy systems, advanced materials, carbon management and resource-efficient industrial processes. That is a deliberate widening from the firm’s origins in Anglo American Platinum’s platinum-group metals programme, which focused on fuel cells and hydrogen before spinning out as an independent venture firm in 2018.

Rising electricity demand from data centers, supply chain vulnerabilities, decarbonization pressure and the spread of AI into industrial operations have all made physical-world technology more commercially urgent than it was five years ago.

Hardware’s slower clock

Industrial and energy startups take longer to reach revenue than software companies and need more capital per milestone. That makes fund size a strategic question, and $300M lets AP Ventures follow on into later rounds rather than getting diluted when a pilot becomes a plant.

Founder and managing partner Andrew Hinkly said the close reflects confidence from new and existing investors in the firm’s ability to identify companies addressing real industrial needs.

Why this close matters for founders

European industrial founders have complained for years that climate capital concentrates on software-adjacent decarbonization while the companies building electrolysers and process equipment struggle to fund first-of-a-kind plants. A $300M vehicle aimed at exactly that stage is a meaningful addition, even if it will not close the gap alone.
