Crosby circles the remains of Weil Gotshal as 1,200 lawyers scatter

Crosby, a two-year-old law firm built around its own AI, has bid for the brand and internal data of Weil Gotshal as the storied Wall Street practice moves toward dissolution.

The offer takes in Weil’s trademark, its brand and some unspecified internal data, TechCrunch confirmed. Crosby is also trying to recruit from a roster of 1,200 lawyers. Word of the bid surfaced at The Information first.

According to the New York Times, Weil Gotshal told the paper this week that partners would vote on dissolving within days. Three developments brought it there: the heir apparent declined the top job, several of the firm’s biggest billers departed, and talks to merge with rival Willkie Farr and Gallagher fell apart.

Crosby’s approach inverts the usual startup playbook. Founders who build legal AI normally peddle software to incumbents, as Harvey and Legora do. Crosby instead opened as an actual law firm and uses its models to deliver services at what it promises is a speed never before possible.

Money behind the venture adds up to roughly $85 million. In March a $60 million Series B closed with Lux and Index as leads, alongside seed-lead Sequoia, Elad Gil, 01 Advisors and Bain Capital Ventures. The firm left stealth in 2025 on $5.8 million of seed funding.

Buying a nameplate from a dissolving firm is a shortcut to enterprise trust, though the assets on the table exclude the client relationships that gave Weil its value. Those follow the lawyers Crosby hopes to recruit.

No one has blamed legal AI for Weil’s downfall. Yet AI may shape where the profession goes next, and if Crosby prevails, an incumbent’s legacy could rise again inside an AI-first competitor. Pricing of the offer stayed private, and Crosby may well lose.
