01.AI, the lab Kai-Fu Lee founded to chase frontier models, has secured investment worth hundreds of millions of RMB from state-backed investors in Hangzhou and its Linping district.
The deal was inked October 28, with the announcement following on October 30. Under the terms, headquarters move to Linping, where it will also open a facility aimed at getting local firms onto AI.
The strategic shift is the real news. 01.AI has been retreating from consumer products toward enterprise delivery. September brought an end to trials and API service on its public model platform, shutting the widest entrance outsiders had.
In Lee’s telling the business now takes Chinese open-weight systems such as DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM and tailors them for corporate buyers, with about half of revenue coming from oevenue earned outside China.
That is a considerable distance from the position 01.AI occupied in 2023, when its Yi models were presented as China’s answer to the leading Western labs. Open-weight rivals have since compressed the gap and cut the price of base models toward zero.
Taking municipal capital brings the usual trade. Hangzhou gets a headquarters, a local adoption programme and a share of any upside, and 01.AI gets patient money in a market where private VC has grown selective about foundation model builders.
The risk is that serving a regional enterprise base rewards implementation work rather than research, and the company’s identity is still built on the latter.
