The camera on a phone is limited by physics more often than by software. OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a Los Altos maker of smartphone camera software, in a deal The Wall Street Journal reported at more than $300M. Neither company has confirmed the purchase.
The target was founded in 2019 by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, two former Apple engineers who previously led the team behind Portrait Mode. Glass Imaging’s product, GlassAI, is a neural image signal processor. Instead of editing a photo after capture, it trains networks against a specific lens and sensor pairing, then reconstructs demosaicing, noise reduction, sharpening and frame fusion in a single pass.
The company’s pitch is that its output reflects detail the sensor actually captured rather than detail a model invented. Glass Imaging previously raised about $30M, and has pitched the same software at drones, wearables and other devices where cramped optics struggle on their own.
The acquisition lands in the middle of OpenAI’s hardware push. In May 2025 the company paid $6.5B in stock for Jony Ive’s io Products and has since hired dozens of Apple employees. A screenless speaker priced near $300 is among the devices reported to be in development, and the company has been linked to phones, earbuds and AI companion hardware.
Camera quality is a recurring constraint on small devices, which makes per-module tuning a useful asset for a company designing its own hardware.
