Efficient Computer has closed a $97M round led by TQ Ventures, with Eclipse, Union Square Ventures, Giant Ventures, Triatomic Capital, TO Capital, TF Capital, Mana Ventures, Toyota Ventures, Overmatch and Borderless joining. Total funding now stands at $650M, after a $60M round in February.
The company is bringing to market a chip built on a data flow architecture rather than the x86 design used by Intel and AMD. It claims the approach can cut energy consumption by up to 100 times, enough to run some devices for months or years on a single charge.
Power has become the binding constraint in AI data centers, where accelerators draw enormous current to feed training runs. Chips that hold their efficiency under sustained load would let operators pack more compute into the same electrical envelope.
Investors are funding a broad hunt for hardware that breaks the usual tradeoff between speed and watts. Efficient’s wager is that the answer is not a smaller transistor but a different way of moving data through silicon.
