Sheffield spin-out Silvia Bio raises £3M to fix misbehaving cells

Northern Gritstone led a seed round for a biotech that diagnoses why the cells making medicines underperform.

Pharmaceutical factories run on living cells, and those cells often misbehave. Silvia Bio has raised £3M to explain why.

Northern Gritstone led the seed round. Also backing the University of Sheffield spin-out: Wren Capital, a group of angels, the UK Innovation and Science Seed Fund managed by Future Planet Capital, and the Parkwalk Northern Universities Venture Fund.

Biologics are made inside mammalian cells acting as biological factories. When a line underperforms, output falls and production costs climb. A Tufts University estimate cited by the company puts the price of delay at roughly £500,000 in lost sales per day for a biopharmaceutical developer, while patients wait longer for treatments.

Silvia Bio identifies which biological factors are limiting output, then formulates additives compatible with existing bioreactors that can be licensed to manufacturers. The pitch is that its findings slot into a process a drugmaker already runs, rather than demanding new equipment.

That matters because validation costs in biomanufacturing are brutal. Any change to a licensed process triggers fresh regulatory work, so suppliers sell incremental fixes rather than new platforms.

The company is moving from university premises into dedicated laboratory space at the Innovation Centre in Sheffield, and plans to triple headcount, automate manual steps and expand commercial capacity. Two decades and more of biomanufacturing research underpins the venture, with professors Adam Brown and David James joined by Melinda Pohle and Ed Curry as co-founders.

The market they are chasing is consolidation-friendly. Drugmakers have outsourced manufacturing to contract organisations that compete on yield, and anything that reliably lifts output per batch commands attention. The risk is timing: biotech funding has tightened, and new capacity plans are being deferred.
