Firmware shipped to a factory floor is usually stale by the time a part reaches the line, and plant teams respond by hand-flashing each unit or boxing the batch back to the supplier. Both routes eat hours and margin.

PreScalar, founded in 2025, has banked $7 million in seed money to sell that fix as hardware. Dynamo Ventures and BMW i Ventures co-led, with Blue Wire Capital, Uplift Ventures and Antler joining as well.

Skyler Salman, chief executive, came from running test operations at Cruise, Rivian, Waymo and Google. CTO Ben Fredrickson wrote safety-critical software at Cruise, Auris and Remedy Robotics, while COO John Cathcart ran product launches at Cruise, Lucid, SF Motors and Chrysler.

Built in-house by rich teams, now sold as a product

The kit starts with one test station and spreads node by node down the line. Workflow, firmware control and telemetry all land in one dataset, so the more lines and suppliers that touch the system, the sharper the read on each device in motion.

Salman says the tooling gap is mostly cultural. The physical kit has moved on sharply while assembly practice lagged, he argues, and his team is selling what they had to improvise at their old jobs. The money moves capability down-market, letting smaller houses run infrastructure once held by elite engineering organizations.

Its market is software-defined hardware: self-driving fleets, autos, robotics, consumer devices and defense. McKinsey figures automotive software and electronics could be worth $519 billion by 2035, yet many plants built for physical goods were never designed to handle routine patches. Instrumental sells AI defect detection and National Instruments, now Emerson, has done test and measurement for decades, but PreScalar’s wedge is deployment plus traceability at the station. Cash covers R&D, hardware production, hiring and deployments.
