British long-duration storage company Certain Energy has raised £10M ($13.6M) in a Series A led by British Business Bank, with Centrica, Ceres Power Holdings and Temasek Trust’s Catalytic Capital for Climate and Health also participating.

The company, founded in 2017 as a spin-off from Imperial College London and previously known as RFC Power, is commercializing manganese flow batteries that store renewable electricity for release when wind and solar generation dips. The technology is designed to stabilize grids, cut renewable curtailment and reduce reliance on gas-fired peaker plants.

The fresh capital funds commercialization and grid-scale preparation, including a grid-connected MWh-class system in India, expansion of its UK research facility and construction of a supply chain for replicable projects.

The round comes as investors pour money into grid storage, betting that batteries beyond lithium-ion will be needed to firm up weather-dependent power. Flow batteries offer long lifetimes and non-flammable chemistries, though they have historically been pricier per unit of power.

With a Temasek Trust climate vehicle on the cap table and a UK state bank leading, Certain Energy is positioning itself as a decarbonization play with institutional credibility.
