Restate has raised a $20M Series A led by Singular, with Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures participating, to make long-running AI agent workflows survive crashes.
Founder Stephen Ewen started the Berlin company in 2022 to build durable workflow infrastructure, an execution engine that keeps multi-step processes consistent when networks drop or servers restart. Agents, which run for hours and wander down unpredictable paths, turned out to need exactly that.
Ewen says the engine was never designed for agents, but became a natural fit for the problems they surface. Durability matters most when a task must be reproducible, so the system records every step and can resume from the last good one.
Restate has since signed several six- and seven-figure contracts, including the vibe coding platform Replit, and counts Fortune 500 financial customers. Rather than sit on an external database, it built its own storage, replication and redundancy layers to stay fast and light.
That puts it against Temporal, the durable execution heavyweight, which raised $550M at a $12.55B valuation this month. Restate is far smaller, but the agent boom is widening the market, since every autonomous workflow touching money or records needs a way to resume where it stopped.
