Dutch mobile connectivity startup Braid pockets $38M from Octopus

The Amsterdam company wants bank and airline apps to ship their own mobile data instead of sending users to a carrier.

Braid, an Amsterdam company that packages mobile connectivity as a component rather than a subscription, has raised $38M in Series A funding led by Octopus Ventures with KPN Ventures participating.

The product solves a mundane but expensive problem. When a bank, airline or delivery app needs a customer to be reachable abroad, the usual route is a data roaming package sold by a carrier, which is slow to provision and awkward to bill in small increments.

Braid embeds connectivity directly inside partner applications, so the app itself can carry the SIM profile and charge for data as part of its own service.

The market has warmed as embedded SIM technology matured and operators grew willing to wholesale access. For travel and financial services companies, a connected customer is one who can complete a transaction mid-journey without hunting for airport wifi, and the data trail is commercially useful too.

KPN Ventures’ involvement signals that at least one incumbent carrier sees the model as complementary rather than cannibalistic.

The company says the money funds global expansion, and the investor roster suggests the plan is to sign more carriers and more app partners simultaneously.

The main risk is structural. Connectivity is a low-margin business where the wholesale price is set by the same operators Braid wants as partners, and any aggregator that grows large enough becomes a competitor to the carriers that supply it. Octopus is betting that being useful to both sides early is the defensible position.
