As reported by Agweb, AgLaunch and 42 of its network farmers—in a landmark moment for farmer-led innovation—have cashed out their early investment in an irrigation technology startup, marking the first time a farmer-run agtech accelerator has returned profits directly to growers.

The startup, first backed in 2017 during early-stage field trials, delivered a 5x return for its original farmer-investors, with payouts ranging from a few hundred dollars to as much as $9,000.
AgLaunch’s model puts farmers at the center of agricultural innovation—not just as users, but as investors and decision-makers. Through a crowdsourced selection process and multi-year field trials, growers help identify agtech solutions and shape them before commercialization. The result is a pipeline of 39 startups built with real-world farm data, real-world feedback—and now, real-world returns.
“We’ve created a system where any kind of farmer, regardless of background or crop, can participate in and benefit from agtech innovation.
— Pete Nelson, AgLaunch executive director
“This is the proof point we needed,” said AgLaunch executive director Pete Nelson. “We’ve created a system where any kind of farmer, regardless of background or crop, can participate in and benefit from agtech innovation. It’s the first time globally that a process like this has returned money directly to farmers—turning innovation into a new kind of farm income.”
