Tanel is now part of Alan, a deal that pays off the Dakar startup’s founders and investors while handing the French insurer its first African market. Mouhamed Ndoye and Makhtar Diop built the company to digitize employer health coverage after founding it in 2021.

Today Tanel serves Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, where roughly 70,000 members across more than 400 companies use its tools to manage staff benefits and find care. The network it opens up spans over 1,200 pharmacies and healthcare providers.

Alan knew the startup well before the deal, having backed its 2024 seed round. Under the acquisition, Tanel keeps its team and leadership while drawing on Alan’s technology and resources to expand.

The pair aims to reach more than 1 million African members by 2030, with plans to push into English-speaking West and East Africa. The deal gives Alan a beachhead in a region where insurance penetration is low but mobile-first distribution is advancing quickly.

The takeover stands out as one of the larger exits in African healthtech, where most venture outcomes are still early-stage rounds rather than acquisitions by European incumbents.
