Runway Financial has rebranded as cfo.ai and pivoted away from accounting software, launching an AI agent called Ari that it bills as an always-on finance chief for founders and small business owners.

Founded in 2020 to automate financial planning and modeling, the startup now pitches a virtual finance leader that connects to a company’s existing stack, including NetSuite, QuickBooks, Stripe, Salesforce and Snowflake. Once wired up, Ari builds a model of the business’s financial health and takes instructions through Slack, forecasting cash flow or stress-testing a hiring plan on request.

It also acts unprompted. By tracking recurring revenue, cash flow, churn, margins and earnings, Ari flags a sudden churn spike or an unexpected cash shortfall, investigates why and suggests fixes.

Chief executive Siqi Chen says the difference from AI-enabled accounting tools is spreadsheets. Large language models handle routine accounting and reporting, he argues, but they struggle with forecasting because a spreadsheet’s meaning lives in cell positions such as B7 or G12, which models cannot see the way humans do.

Ari’s underlying engine, Reambase, abandons the visual grid and addresses cells by named variables and dimensions such as region, month or customer, so semantic meaning travels with the value and the engine handles the formulas underneath.

Chen’s framing is that a chatbot waits to be asked while a finance chief watches the business and brings problems forward. Whether founders trust an agent with that much autonomy over the books is the next test.
